From Miami to Havana, it's everyone's favorite cocktail. Squeeze the juice of a lime (never a lemon) into a glass. Add 2 teaspoons of sugar (or simple syrup or the untraditional grenadine syrup) and a shot of rum. Stir well, keeping in mind that sugar doesn't dissolve well in cold liquids and if you don't dissolve properly you'll end up with a very sweet final sip. Throw in some fresh mint (not chopped) and muddle some more. If you are very modern, try orange mint or lemon mint. Add lots of large fresh ice cubes and top off with a charge of plain soda water. Stir. Serve.
The drink is only as good as the rum you serve so here's an occasion to splurge and get the best. This is a Cuban drink but we've had great success with Haiti's Barboncourt rum, now thankfully available again since the Haitian embargo. |
